THE STORY
Designed in 1919 by John and Alan McDonald, the father-and-son firm behind some of Omaha's most familiar buildings, and completed in 1922, this six-story brick-and-limestone headquarters anchored the corner of 18th & Howard for the Standard Oil Company of Nebraska. As the oil company era faded, the building carried on for decades of office life, becoming known to generations of Omahans as the Law Building, and earned its place in the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. Its rehabilitation into 40 studio and one-bedroom apartments, with new ground-floor commercial bays anchored by Colette's Mercato from the Dirty Birds team, makes it a cornerstone of the emerging Flatiron District, the walkable neighborhood taking shape between the Old Market and the new Mutual of Omaha tower.

THE STORY
The oldest of the three, this sturdy brick building began life in 1892 as a carriage factory for one of Omaha's pioneer blacksmiths. From 1898 to 1915 it hummed with the presses and stock of the Western Newspaper Union and Western Paper Company. It was publishing magnate George Joslyn, the name behind Joslyn Castle and the Joslyn Art Museum, who then leased it to the Scott-Omaha Tent & Awning Company whose sign gave the building its historic identity. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2017, the building now begins its next century as The Prescott: sixteen boutique apartments above new commercial bays, with a genuine rarity for a 19th-century downtown building, sixteen underground garage stalls, roughly one for every home.
